We have been filming and editing in high definition for quite a while now but we have had to provide our programmes converted down to standard definition usually on DVD. The storage capacity of a DVD is 4.7 GB.
Now, with the introduction of Blu-ray technology, we have the means to burn high definition programmes onto Blu-ray discs with the dual layer version having a storage capacity of 50 GB.
We can now provide your programmes in HD on Blu-ray discs for which you will need a Blu-ray disc player and a HD ready TV/monitor to view the programme in HD.
If you are distributing hundreds of copies we recommend that you still use standard definition for this as most people do not have access to Blu-ray disc players yet. No reason why you can’t have a few Blu-ray versions for exhibitions and special events though.
For you information a standard DVD may hold up to 4.7 GIG of data. A Blu-ray disc will store 25 GIG and a dual layer Blu-ray disc will store 50 GIG.
High Definition is approximately 4 times the definition of standard definition and comes into its own when used on large screens at exhibitions.
